Charcoal sketching is very much like normal sketching with pencil or graphite, but a lot messier. Prepare to have black hands after this class. Charcoal allows us to create images with contrasting shadows and highlights. Practice sketching with pencil before trying charcoal to master the skill of sketching.

Charcoal will get you dirty, but it is much easier to clean than oil paint. A sketch done with charcoal should be sprayed with hairspray or setting spray to make sure the charcoal does not rub off the paper.
